Pax Christi publicises Camilleri's Kosovo letter

The peace movement Pax Christi International has given publicity to the letter of 10 April 1999 which Professor Joseph Camilleri, President of Pax Christi Australia, wrote to Mr Javier Solana, Secretary General of NATO.

This said (inter alia): "We share with the member governments of NATO the view that the humanitarian tragedy in Kosovo deserves a prompt and substantial response from the international community. We are not convinced, however, that the massive use of air power by NATO is likely to accomplish this task. Indeed, all the indications thus far are that the bombing has already resulted in a great many casualties both in Kosovo and the rest of Yugoslavia without bringing any nearer the end of the conflict or of the disastrous displacement and exodus of Kosovars. Equally troublesome is the fact that the NATO operation has not been authorised by the United Nations, or by any other appropriate international treaty or legal instrument."
