| Based in the Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences, it is a University-wide initiative spanning
all faculties. Dr Hogan said La Trobe's extensive connections with
universities in East Asia and North America mean researchers can stop over
at Manila when they travel to those regions. A number of events have already
taken place under the auspices of the new Centre.
Professor Vivian Lin, from the School of Public Health, and Mr Cliff
Picton, Social Work &Social Policy, visited Ateneo late last year. In
February a delegation led by PASC director, Dr Hogan comprised La Trobe
academics Professor Joseph Camilleri and Mr Larry Marshall, (Politics), and
Professor Joel Kahn and Daisuke Tanaka, (Sociology and Anthropology).
Ateneo University, founded by the Jesuits in the nineteenth century, is
the Philippines' leading private university. It has strong research networks
throughout Asia and close links with universities in Japan, USA, France and
Spain.
La Trobe Adjunct Professor Charles Mott - a former Australian diplomat,
and Deputy Director of PASC - initiated the involvement of Australian
Ambassador to the Philippines, Ms Ruth Pearce, who has been an active
supporter of the Centre in Manila. Other La Trobe office bearers of the
Centre include Professor of Asian Studies, John Fitzgerald.
