Keynote lecture presented by Joseph A. Camilleri

Celebrating Cultural Diversity: Acknowledging the Failures of the Past, Meeting the Challenges of the Future

The presentation dealt with the following questions:

  • Can we develop within Australia over the next ten years a rich and enduring nation-wide dialogue between the diverse cultures, faiths and civilisations that make up the country?
  • Can we develop with the peoples of Asia and the Pacific a rich and enduring dialogue between the diverse cultures, faiths and civilisations that make up the region?
  • Who or what stands in the way of achieving these two closely connected objectives?
  • How are these obstacles to be overcome?
  • Who has the interest, the will and the capacity to do the job?
