Cato Institute
http://www.cato.org
Aims
The Cato Institute is a non-profit public policy
research foundation headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Institute is named for
Cato's Letters, a series of libertarian pamphlets that helped lay the
philosophical foundation for the American Revolution. The Cato Institute seeks
to broaden the parameters of public policy debate to allow consideration of the
traditional American principles of limited government, individual liberty, free
markets and peace. Toward that goal, the Institute strives to achieve greater
involvement of the intelligent, concerned lay public in questions of policy and
the proper role of government.
Activities
The Cato Institute undertakes an extensive
publications program dealing with the complete spectrum of public policy issues.
Books, monographs, briefing papers and shorter studies are commissioned to
examine issues in nearly every corner of the public policy debate. Policy forums
and book forums are held regularly, as are major policy conferences, which Cato
hosts throughout the year, and from which papers are published thrice yearly in
the Cato Journal. Additionally, Cato has held major conferences in London,
Moscow, Shanghai, and Mexico City. The Institute also publishes the quarterly
magazine Regulation, the scholarly journal Cato Journal and a bimonthly
newsletter, Cato Policy Report.
Publications and other Resources
The website features a very large amount of
downloadable material available at no cost. This includes Policy Studies divided
into Policy Analysis, Trade Policy Analysis, Foreign Policy Briefing, Tax and
Budget Bulletin, Trade Briefing Papers and Social Security Choice Papers.
Articles from both the current issue and archived issues of Regulation and Cato
Journal are also available in PDF format at no cost. Samples from the Center's
audio publication CatoAudio are also available to download in Mp3 and RealAudio
formats at no cost.
