Aims
The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory
University, is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the
alleviation of human suffering; it seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts,
enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. The Center is a
not-for-profit, nongovernmental organisation and is associated with Emory
University and is governed by an independent board of trustees, chaired by
former President Jimmy Carter. The Center's Board of Councilors provides its
programs with the advice and support of prominent regional and local figures.
Activities
Programs are directed by resident experts or
fellows, some of whom teach at Emory University. They design and implement
activities in cooperation with President and Mrs. Carter, networks of world
leaders, other nongovernmental organizations, and partners in the United States
and abroad. The Center runs Peace Programs (covering topics like conflict
resolution, human rights initiatives, global development initiatives etc.)
Health Programs (covering areas such as river blindness, trachoma, mental health
etc.) and country specific programs.
Publications and other Resources
Both the Peace Program and the Health Program
sections of the website feature Program reports and articles written by Center
staff to download in PDF format at no cost. The Health Program also features
newsletters and profiles available in HTML format at no cost.
